A
iden looked around and made a gesture that I recognised as sign language.
âIs this place warded?â
âyes,â I signed back. âbut it may not be secure.â
He grimaced. âWe need privacy.â
âbedroom?â I signed. âi had a spell put in there,â
He was looking mildly amused now. âSure.â
âYour signing is all off,â he said, as soon as I closed the bedroom door. âNo capitals.â
I rolled my eyes. âIs that the important thing here? How did you escape the fire of truth?â
âHow did you?â he countered.
I shrugged. âIâve no idea. I could feel the spell, but Selby just waved me through.â
Aiden gave me a brief smile. âI didnât escape,â he said. âThey caught me.â
I stared at him, not understanding before his spell caught and immobilised me.
âIâm sorry,â he said. âThey put a spell on me. Mind control. Itâs dragon magic. I cannot do anything to fight it.â
I felt a faint tingling even in my immobilised state. Someone was powering through my wards. But Aiden seemed not to realise it.
âI donât want to hurt you,â he said. âBut Iâm⦠itâs like a programming. If I⦠if I catch a spy, Iâve to hold them⦠if you fight me, I may have to kill you.â
That didnât appeal to me. But there was someone breaking in, and they had to be here only because of Aiden discovering I was a spy. What would they do to me? Kill me? That seemed likely. They already had Aiden spreading misinformation.
âThe information you gave,â I said. âThe reports you sent. Any of it true?â
âEvery word,â he said. âThey didnât try to stop me from that. I donât think they even know Iâm able to contact my superiors. They never asked me. I told them I was compromised and that I should be terminated. My people. I was expecting to die tonight.â
I felt cold. That information was not in the binder Iâd got. Captain Dalton wouldnât have kept it from me. Which meant that she was never informed. Aidenâs superiors obviously thought he could be rescued, and they sent me in without telling me or my captain that Aiden was compromised.
âSo, you have some will,â I noted. âOnly, you canât free me.â
He shook his head. âI canât not tell them about you either,â
I would have nodded if I could move. âWhat are they going to do to me?â I asked.
âThe same thing they would have done to me,â he said, resignedly. âI donât think Cedric will let you be killed. Why did you break up with him anyway?â
âWe had a one night stand,â I said. âWhat is there to break up?â
âCedric seems to think it more,â
âThatâs his problem,â
Even as I spoke, I was aware that Cedric was in my flat. The spell must be wearing off. It was a one-time spell, and according to the notes, it should have lasted longer. Unless the Atamendhen was stronger than usual.
Just my fucking luck.
The bedroom door opened and Selby walked in, with Cedric behind him. He looked pale and anxious as he saw me.
âWhat is this?â Selby asked, his voice frosty.
